A successful college search starts early, perhaps as soon as the freshman year of high school. Depending on the course level you choose, College Sherpa creates an integrated plan to guide high school families through the college preparation, selection, admission and financial aid process. College Sherpa is also available for short-term, specific consulting needs.
For Juniors and Seniors
Analysis
Interviews and assessments are conducted to help define the student’s interests and aptitudes. Based on the information gathered, students can begin to focus on possible careers and college majors.
Preparation
A roadmap is created that will lead the student through the process. We work with the student and parents to establish objectives and timelines. High school courses and extra-curricular activities are assessed to determine if the student is on track or needs to course-correct. A schedule and strategy for taking standardized tests is prepared.
Selection
A list of target colleges is developed based on specific selection factors that fit the values of the student. A “college discovery” plan is devised including campus visits. The list of target colleges is narrowed by Spring of the Junior year. A separate, comprehensive Student Athlete program is available to guide families through the recruiting process.
Admission
The application process is supervised and timelines are created to meet the deadlines of each selected college. Students learn if Early Decision/Early Action is an appropriate option. College essay and interview preparation/coaching is conducted. A strategy for letters of recommendation is established.
Financial Aid
Families are guided through the required forms, filing and deadlines including FAFSA and CSS/PROFILE. Students are advised on types of scholarships and the application process. A separate, comprehensive financial aid program is available where all financial aid awards are reviewed and evaluated as well as coaching for financial aid appeals and requests for additional aid.
For Freshmen and Sophomores Consultations focus on creating a plan for high school course selection and extracurricular activities. Personality assessments provide insight into the student’s interests and potential career path. A preliminary roadmap is established to allow visibility to the college admissions process, standardized tests and a timeline so both student and parent know what to expect. |
